In addition to ordinary IP work, I have considerable experience of working in those areas of IP and related areas of law that are less frequently encountered than the mainstream of IP cases most IP practitioners are familiar with and encounter frequently. I have handled cases of construction of agreements (commercial ones) and cases relating to dispute settlements (eg undertakings to the Court) as well as statutory interpretation.
Some cases in which I was instructed or briefed have been published.
Necessarily, in almost every case I have been involved in making settlement offers and where these have not been successful, in mediations to try to settle disputes or protect my clients' interests in costs.
My family history has been of involvement in engineering since about the 1880s.
I am a self-employed barrister-at-law practising in the courts of England and Wales.
I provide legal services: Advocacy, advice and drafting.
I have a UK science background and training, with professional experience as a multi-disciplinary research scientist in the UK and the USA working in areas of research at the forefront of "high technology" (instrumentally and biotechnologically) and several publications in learned scientific journals.
I have a law degree from an English university.
I work at or from chambers in London specialising in IP and IT:
7 New Square Chambers (full address and other contact details are available), Lincoln's Inn, London
and I am associated with chambers in Manchester (as a "door tenant" I undertake work from these chambers) specialising in Chancery and Commercial matters as well as general Common Law work:
Cobden House Chambers (formerly known as Hollins-Bridge Street Chambers), in splendid premises at 19 Quay Street, Manchester M3 3HN (formerly at 64a Bridge Street, Manchester M3 3BA). 19 Quay Street was the Manchester County Court for decades.
Solicitors, patent agents and trade mark agents usually instruct or brief Counsel to act for lay Clients. Additionally (this is not exhaustive, merely illustrative), legal departments (if headed by a barrister or solicitor) of local authorities, employed solicitors and arbitrators may instruct Counsel.
Members of the public may instruct or brief me directly. This is subject to the special provisions of the Code of Conduct of The Bar of England and Wales, for which I direct readers to the Bar Council's website www.barcouncil.org.uk
Under some circumstances (essentially those set out in the Overseas Practice Rules for the Bar in Annex F of the Code of Conduct of The Bar of England and Wales) Counsel may be instructed in overseas work.
